EVENTS & FESTIVALS IN VIENTIANE
Almost every month of the year there is either a local festival or celebration in Laos.The word for festival in Lao is boun, which also means doing good things in order to gain merit for subsequent lives. If you are in Vientiane while any of the festivals are taking place you will surely be welcomed and asked to join the fun. Please feel free to participate, however remember that most of the festivals are based on religious beliefs, so your hosts will appreciate it if you respect local codes of behavior.

Rocket Festival
The rocket festival in Vientiane Province is an exciting, noisy and colorful festival. It is an event that is meaning and important in religion of people in Vientiane Province and in the Country. It held at the end of April to mid May of the hot season. The purpose of the festival to ask for rain from the sky gods the rain will help the rice and other crops to grow. Villagers send rockets up to the sky gods so they will send rain.


Boat Racing Festival
Before Boun Khao Phansa (Buddhist Lent Festival) opening the season of Boat Racing Festival, the people who  live in Nam Ngum riverside held Boat racing festival, it is a traditional and customs. The festival is an exciting, colorful and noisy because other villages have sent the boat to compete to each other. There are 2 types of boat like: Customs Boat and Formula boat and 2 kinds of team like: Men and Women team. Other Villages are showing the rowboat, competing, and also practicing before attending the nation boat racing competition at Tha Wat Chanh Temple riverside in Vientiane capital they held in the Boun Ok Phansa (End of Buddhist Lent Festival) in every year. After finished competition in Vientiane capital they will held the festival again for closing the season.  


Boun Kin Jieng (Hmong Ethnic’s New Year festival)
Boun Kin Jieng or Hmong ethnic‘s new year festival held around at the end of December to mid January in every year, The period is about 1 month. There are many activities of this festival like: Singing, Bull hitting; Dancing,Trade exhibition; Food arranging (Hmong people are usually killing pigs to cook the food) and one important activity that cannot be lacked is Markhon Throwing (Markhon is a same Tennis Ball) the Purpose of this activity is showing love to each other. Young boys and Young girls wear the unique clothes of Hmong Ethnic that is a highlight of the festival.
