Overnight Camping in Nam Ngum
It’s a rare experience camping close to detention camps. Don Nang (for women) and Don Thao (for men) are two islands on the Nam Ngum River, which are used primarily as a prison for drugs-related crime. Being able to spend a night close by without light or noise is a somewhat eerie experience. There is no way to escape; crossing the lake without a boat is out of the question. This might not sound an appealing place to visit, but visitor can enjoy a bonfire with all night singing and nobody will stop them.
White Beach Sand Island is another popular destination for camping on the Nam Ngum. Less than half and hour by boat, visitors can enjoy scenic surroundings with a mountain range, wide open skies and a beautiful river in the background. Before setting off for the island, pack food and drinks. Tents are available on rent. Other activities are swimming, jet skiing, kayaking and sightseeing around the island. The old boathouse is now a sentry station. Stop by to purchase souvenirs made by the prisoners or just smile and chat with the traders about some of their interesting experience.
