THE WAY OF THE MAHOUT
ElefantAsia has teamed with Elephant Adventures Lao to offer of four-day caravan from Luang Prabang to Hongsa, providing would-be mahouts with their own pachyderms to learn what it takes to care for and drive the nation’s pride.
Day 1: Travel by boat and/or road from Luang Prabang to Hongsa’s Ban Vieng Keo. Meet your mahout and elephant, and begin trekking along rice fields and a river to Ban Than, to bathe your elephant, visit the village, campout or overnight in a home-stay.
Day 2: Follow the Nam Tap River through fields and forests, learning basic mahout driving skills and ensuring your elephant eats. After a five-hour trek, arrive at Ban Nam Tap and set up camp (or opt for a home-stay). Bathe in a local stream before dinner.
Day 3: By now, you know the basic skills to ride your elephant without the mahout. After preparing your elephant, cross a forest to a river, and follow the valley until reaching the Mekong for a solo “driving test”. Take a swim before setting up camp, and relaxing along the Mekong or walking through the countryside. Enjoy a riverside dinner and a campout or home-stay.
Day 4: After breakfast, the elephants arrive to say goodbye as you board a boat for the six-hour cruise to Luang Prabang.
