Roughly halfway between Houai Xay and Luang Namtha Town on Lao Route 3, Ban Don Chai serves as the gateway to the Nam Kan NPA and its “Gibbon Experience”. It is also home to the Bokeo Arts and Crafts Center, where the Bokeo Handicraft Collective sells its goods. Among the collective’s members, Hmong embroiderers offer decorative fabric wall hangings as well as cloth key chains and dangling ornaments with intricate designs. The Tai Lue produce a variety of woven household items such as coasters, placemats, tablecloths, table runners, curtains, bedspreads, and cushion covers, many of which are sold in Vientiane Capital and Luang Prabang. Shoppers can also purchase everyday products used by locals such as wicker baskets and drinking vessels made from dried gourds.

Location: Ban Don Chai is 70 kilometers north of Houai Xay and about 20 kilometers from the Luang Namtha provincial border. Home stay accommodation is available in the village.
