Lao athlete Sayavong “Py” Vongviseth participated in the 18th Powerman Malaysia 2023 duathlon competition in Putrajaya on Sunday, where he won gold in the Powerman Short – Male 40-49 category with a record time of 1:38:14.
Powerman Malaysia is the world’s biggest duathlon competition, which saw 2,282 athletes join this year. Powerman Elite, Powerman Classic, and Powerman Short were the three participating categories in the competition.
Py achieved a ranking of 20th among all athletes across different categories and secured the 19th position out of a total of 1,892 male athletes.
The duathlon which Py competed in had a 5-30-5 format, 5 km run, 30 km cycling followed by another 5 km run. Py ran the first 5 km in 18 minutes and 34 seconds. After arriving at the first transition, Py took 5 minutes and 45 seconds to change into his biking gear and began his 30 km journey.
Py then went on to cycle a 10 km distance in 14 minutes and 49 seconds, he took 17 minutes 54 seconds to reach the 21 km mark and 11 minutes 28 seconds to cross the 28 km mark, bringing his total time up to 01:08:08.
He reached the second transition point after 01:10:36, changed back to his running gear, and began the last leg of the competition with a time of 01:16:10.
Py ran the last 5 km leg in about 24 minutes, finally crossing the finish line at 1:38:14, making him the winner in his category.
In a Facebook post, Py said that this was his first ever time participating in the Powerman Malaysia competition, and expressed gratitude for being able to represent Laos.
Lao Athletes are gradually starting to make their mark in the world of sports, standing out as a force to be reckoned with, and even managing to win 88 medals at the recently held 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia.
During the 6th Plenary Session of the 11th Party Central Committee held last week, President Thongloun Sisoulith addressed the committee, asking them to focus on several key tasks to overcome the current economic situation in Laos.
During the meeting which was chaired by the President, party members unanimously agreed to maintain unity and tackle the current economic situation for the socio-economic development of the country.
The committee also agreed to help Laos increase its production strength and become less reliant on imports, and develop policies to further promote exemptions for production-related businesses.
One of the main topics discussed during the session was the need to prevent budget leaks and reduce expenditures to prioritize savings.
Furthermore, President Thongloun and the committee agreed to focus on developing the tourism sector as the country prepares to declare 2024 as the year of tourism and also chair the ASEAN 2024 Summit. Lao Leaders are focused on increasing bilateral cooperation with ASEAN and other countries as well.
According to Target Magazine, the government is also keen on bridging the gap between the Lao diaspora settled abroad and their homeland to increase their contribution to the development of the nation.
Laos previously chaired ASEAN in 2004-2005 and 2016, and also hosted the ASEAN Tourism Forum in 2004 and 2013, which successfully publicized the country’s many tourist attractions.

KPLreports that in response to the invitation from the government of China, Mr. Thongloun Sisoulith, President of Laos, and his wife, Mrs. Naly Sisoulith visited Li Xi, Secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China on Thursday.
During the visit, the Lao president sent a heartfelt message to President Xi Jinping on the occasion of his 70th birthday and expressed admiration for the Chinese president’s successful governance.
Mr. Li, on behalf of the Chinese government, congratulated the recently concluded Sixth Preliminary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the Lao People’s National Party on its success.
In addition, the two leaders discussed regional and global issues and affirmed that they will continue to coordinate and support one another in multilateral forums.
Representatives of the Chinese government also thanked the Lao government for its participation in international meetings organized by the country.
Delegates from Laos also visited the Kunming Institute of Botany, where they toured and exchanged information on the modern agricultural practices of Yunnan Province.
